Job Summary The Nurse Midwife offers primary health care for women from adolescence to menopause. This includes primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, and care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. They also care for normal newborns in the first 28 days and treat male partners for sexually transmitted infections. This is done according to the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the Texas Board of Nursing scope of practice. Essential Functions of the Role * Provides direct clinical services and manages mothers and babies. Follows standing orders, policies, procedures, and protocols for the certified nurse midwife. Includes direct prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, well-women patient services, and primary care. Admits, manages, and discharges patients. * Utilizes prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Texas Board of Nursing. Follows regulatory requirements. Documents all prescriptions in the patient's medical record. * Obtains patient health histories and completes physical examinations. Documents findings, noting normal and abnormal results. Orders and interprets diagnostic and laboratory tests. * Performs approved therapeutic procedures based on the patient's clinical status. Explains the necessity, preparation, nature, and expected effects of procedures to the patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners. Documents patient preparation and response to procedures. * Provides patient and family education and formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care. * Provides health promotion, disease prevention, and wellness education in partnership with women and families. This occurs in settings like clinics, private offices, community health systems, homes, hospitals, and birth centers. * Performs and participates in quality improvement activities and clinical research. Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice. Incorporates clinical research findings in developing and implementing standards of care. * Serves as a professional consultant to nursing, healthcare team members, and the larger community. Participates in and helps the organization's accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities. * Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice by participating in organizations and continuing education. Enhances nursing knowledge through idea exchange, presentations, posters, research, and publications. Key Success Factors * Knowledge of midwifery theory, procedures and standards. * Knowledge of gynecological health issues and trends. * Know the information and techniques to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures. * Verbal and written communication skills. * Social and effective listening skills. * Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills. * Skill in the use of computers and related software applications. * Ability to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes-based patient care plans. * Ability to counsel patients concerning medical conditions, treatment plans, and behavior modification.
