Academic Breast Imaging Radiologist

Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont

The Department of Radiology at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont (UVM) is seeking a 1.0 FTE academic Breast Imaging radiologist for a full-time faculty appointment on the Clinical Scholar Pathway at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor. There is opportunity for departmental leadership for the appropriately qualified individual. Applicants must have completed a Breast Imaging fellowship or equivalent and must be American Board of Radiology (ABR) certified or eligible. Expertise in interpreting digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), breast ultrasound (US) and MRI is required; along with experience performing breast biopsies with US, stereotactic and MR guidance and mammographic and US guided wire localizations. The successful candidate will work in the Breast Imaging Division at the University of Vermont Medical Center, which is part of the UVM Health Network Department of Radiology. There will be global health opportunities for the right candidate that could encompass clinical, research, or educational aspects.

The compensation package is competitive and faculty rank is commensurate with experience.

The University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) is the only tertiary referral center and Level 1 Trauma Center for the catchment area of Vermont and Northern Upstate New York. The Network Department of Radiology is part of the larger University of Vermont Health Network in Northern Vermont and New York, comprised of six smaller hospitals in addition to the University of Vermont Medical Center.

The Breast Care Center, staffed by surgical oncologists, nurse navigators and a physician assistant, adjoins the Breast Imaging Department. Radiologists in the Breast Imaging Division participate in multidisciplinary conferences with their colleagues in surgical, medical and radiation oncology as well as pathology and plastic surgery.

The department holds ACR accreditation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. The section is typically staffed with 3 to 4 radiologists each day and performs 28,000 mammographic exams per year; including 23,000 screening mammograms, >95% of them with 3D tomosynthesis. There are 7 Hologic mammographic units; 4 at the 2 screening sites and 3 in our diagnostic center. All units have Hologic 3D tomosynthesis and C-View. There are 3 GE Logic E-10 ultrasound units staffed by dedicated breast sonographers. Supplementary whole breast ultrasound screening for dense breast tissue is performed with GE automated breast ultrasound (ABUS). Clinical breast MRI is performed on a Philips wide bore 3.0T unit with a state of the art 16-channel breast coil. We also have available four 1.5T Philips magnets. Approximately 700 breast biopsies are performed each year: including US guided core biopsies, stereotactic vacuum-assisted biopsies (on both prone and upright units) and MRI guided biopsies.

Additional state-of-the-art imaging facilities at UVMMC include two Brilliance ICT 256-slice CT scanners in close proximity to the Emergency Department, three 128-slice CT scanners, one 64-slice CT scanner and a spectral CT planned for 2022. The department has a dedicated 3D lab with the latest processing software. In addition, we have a state-of-the-art Vereos PET CT.

Ours is an academic practice of 50 full and part-time radiologists who serve as the clinical faculty for the ACGME Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology Residency programs at the University of Vermont. Faculty members are actively engaged in resident and medical student education, including daily image interpretation and teaching conferences, and the Division collaborates with breast colleagues at multiple interdisciplinary conferences. Opportunities for protected time for scholarly activity are offered. A 3.0T dedicated research magnet operated by the University of Vermont MRI Center for Biomedical Imaging is housed in the Radiology Department and staffed by full time experienced research technologists and MR physicists. A dedicated research team supports Radiology Health Services Research in collaboration with investigators at UVM.
