The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking a fellowship-trained or extensively experienced Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologist to join our growing team at the nationally ranked UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. This full-time position offers the opportunity to provide anesthetic care for a wide range of congenital cardiac procedures, including neonatal and complex pediatric heart surgeries, cardiac catheterizations, and non-cardiac procedures in children with congenital heart disease. The successful candidate will work closely with pediatric cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, and other subspecialists in a collaborative clinical environment focused on excellence in patient care, education, and innovation.
As part of an academic medical center, the role includes teaching responsibilities for residents, fellows, and medical students, along with opportunities for clinical research and scholarly activity. Candidates must be board-certified or board-eligible in Anesthesiology, with fellowship training in Pediatric Anesthesiology and additional expertise or training in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia. The position offers a competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and protected non-clinical time for academic pursuits. Faculty appointments are available on the Clinical or Tenure Track at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, depending on qualifications. Appointment at the rank of Instructor (non-track) may also be considered.
These responsibilities include:
- Participating in team-based anesthesia care and personally providing pediatric anesthesia care
- Serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team, collaborating for effective patient outcomes.
- Active participation in the academic activities of the Department and College of Medicine.
- Supervising students, residents, fellows, SRNA’s and non-anesthesia rotators.
- Providing developmental feedback to those under supervision, verbally and in writing.
- Preparing educational materials, leading and/or attending academic lectures and professional development events.
- Research activities are encouraged, though participation is not required for continued employment or promotion.
Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.
Education Requirement:
Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree
Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa
Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent) or be in the certification process. On occasion, individuals trained outside of the United States who are certified by an equivalent national certification group may be considered.
Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Certifications:
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through the American Heart Association
Desirable Qualifications:
American Board of Anesthesia Pediatric Certification
Previous formal supervisory experience is a plus
Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in Pediatric Anesthesia
Experience in teaching and clinical research
