- Outstanding Faculty Opportunity in Cardiac Critical Care

On behalf of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine (UConn SOM) and Connecticut Children’s, CareerPhysician, the national leader in academic child health executive search and leadership development, is pleased to announce the inception of a national search to identify outstaying faculty to join the section of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care at one of the nation’s leading independent children’s hospitals. This represents a unique opportunity to join an expanding program that supports a growing CV surgery program and heart center with opportunities to engage in programmatic oversight and strategic responsibility for growth and innovation.
The selected faculty may choose Step down unit /intermediate unit to help provide continued safe care to cardiac patients in collaboration with the inpatient cardiologist team. The clinical scope will include, advanced heart failure, pediatric pulmonary hypertension, a ventricular assist device and heart transplant program, neurodevelopment in patients with congenital cardiac disease and advanced technologies.
Key Opportunity Highlights:
- Clinical responsibilities: Clinical time in the CVICU, working with multidisciplinary team, while taking part in developing and implementation of care protocols. Will be encouraged to actively participate in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program.
- Educational responsibilities: Supervision, instruction, and mentoring of pediatric residents, and medical students, as well as dedicated CVICU advanced practice providers
- Research: Clinical research opportunities, development of research programs. Candidates will be strongly encouraged to initiate and/or be part of ongoing QI projects
- Programmatic Goals: Lead by Dr. Monika Gupta, the CVICU plans to expand to a 15-bed stand-alone unit within the next year with responsibly supporting a comprehensive heart surgery program targeting 25-30percent growth in surgical volume.
- Top Honors in Cardiac Care: Achieved four AHA Get With The Guidelines® Resuscitation Awards, recognizing best-in-class survival care across neonatal, pediatric, and adult populations.
IAC Certification in Pediatric and ACHD Transthoracic and Transesophageal Echocardiography and Fetal Echocardiography: Accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission to advance standardization and quality of diagnostic imaging.
- Adult Congenital Heart Disease Accreditation: Reaccredited by the Adult Congenital Heart Association for delivering lifelong, specialized cardiac care.
Transformative Facility Expansion: New eight-story inpatient tower with cutting-edge services opened in December 2025, representing a major investment in innovation, advanced technologies, and expanded patient care.
- State-of-the-art Laboratories: Located at Hartford Health and shared with adult departments, providing opportunities for greater collaboration.
ELSO Award of Excellence in ECMO: Awarded in recognition of the top extracorporeal life support programs worldwide through processes, procedures, and systems that promote exceptional care in ECMO
- Transformational Philanthropy and Engagement: Connecticut Children’s was recently named a partner in the Golisano Children’s Hospital alliance, receiving a $50 million gift for clinical and research initiatives. HuskyTHON raised $1.7M in 2024 alone, bringing total contributions to over $51 million.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with a proven track record of excellence across academic medicine, clinical care, and mentoring junior faculty. Candidates should meet the following qualifications and competencies:
- MD, DO, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Pediatric Critical Care
- Sub-specialty Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Pediatric Cardiology OR have one year of advanced training in Pediatric Cardiology.
- Eligibility for permanent, unrestricted medical licensure in Connecticut
Department of Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine is academically based at Connecticut Children’s, an independent, nationally recognized pediatric health system. Since 1996, Connecticut Children’s has served as the principal site for pediatric residency and fellowship training and continues to be the core setting for pediatric education, research, and clinical innovation in the region.
