Hoag Hospital's CVOR is a cornerstone of its perioperative and cardiac surgical services, supporting complex cardiovascular and thoracic procedures in a high-acuity, technologically advanced environment. The CVOR is led by board-certified, fellowship-trained, and internationally respected physician leaders known for advancing minimally invasive and complex cardiac and thoracic surgical techniques.
In partnership with Hoag Heart & Vascular Institute, the CVOR supports a comprehensive range of procedures, including open heart surgery, valve repair and replacement, CABG, thoracic aortic interventions, and advanced vascular cases. The program emphasizes clinical excellence, patient safety, innovation, and measurable quality outcomes.
Requirements
Responsibilities
- Provides direct care to high-acuity cardiac patients.
- Coordinates with perfusionists, anesthesiologists, and surgeons.
- Prepares OR and verifies specialized cardiac equipment.
- Maintains sterile field and monitors vitals/hemodynamics.
- Manages blood coolers and assists with advanced cardiac devices.
- Responds to emergencies (e.g., cardiac arrest, hemorrhage).
- Documents intraoperative events and ensures proper handoff to PACU/CVICU staff.
- Participates in on-call coverage as required, with a response time of 30 minutes upon notification.
- Scrub and/or circulate for complex cardiac procedures (e.g, redo procedures, aortic dissections)
- Serve as charge nurse or team lead during high-risk procedures.
- Lead intraoperative crisis response and emergency protocols.
- Develop and deliver training for CVOR staff on new technologies and procedures.
- Collaborate with surgeons on procedural planning and workflow optimization.
- Lead quality improvement projects and present findings to leadership.
- Act as liaison between CVOR and other departments (e.g., blood bank, cath lab)
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor of Nursing (BSN)
- 3-5 years’ experience in an Acute Healthcare
- 2-3 years’ experience in Cardiovascular Operating Room
- Familiarity with heart-lung machines, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella, pacemakers, and other cardiovascular support devices.
- Understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and surgical procedures (e.g., CABG, valve replacements, aortic repairs)
License Required:
- Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.
Certifications Required
- Current BLS certication before clinical rotation.
- ACLS required within 6 months of hire.
- National Certication in specialty area: CNOR Certification
